College appoints director of diversity

The new position will help the College expand opportunities for students.

The USC College of Letters, Arts & Sciences recently appointed a new director of college diversity, a new position created this year. George Sanchez is a current professor of American studies and ethnicity. "[Sanchez] will work with our many departments so that we can address what the commitment to diversity means in various disciplinary settings," said Howard Gillman, dean of the College, in a memorandum sent to its faculty. Former Greek changes tone of group after Panhellenic meeting

A meeting was held between the creator of a Facebook group and representatives from the Panhellenic Council.

A Facebook group which criticized sorority recruitment methods for being "over the top," changed its content and tone a day after a meeting was held between Panhellenic Council representatives and the group's creator. "We understand that everybody is entitled to their opinion," said Ashley Mahaffey, the president of USC Panhellenic Council and a junior majoring in business administration. (1) comment

Africa Dream Project will host a fundraiser to raise awareness of the grim conditions in African cities.

Africa Dream Project draws attention to slums

Close to one million people live in the 2-square-mile area that comprises the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya. Water is scarce and there is no sewage system. To help collect money for an International Baccalaureate high school and raise general awareness about development and problem solving in the area, the USC branch of Africa Dream Project will hold "Experience Kibera" on Friday at the corner of 30th Street and University Avenue. Commons workers fear relocation

Officials say they don't expect differences between existing and future staffs.

Correction:In the Thursday, May 1, 2008 edition, the Daily Trojan incorrectly reported that Commons will close Saturday, May 3 to prepare for demolition. Commons will remain open the next two weeks and close at the end of Commencement Day, May 16. The Daily Trojan regrets this error. (3) comments

Wonderland Awards commemorate Lewis Carroll's works

This year's winner wrote a series of 18 limericks similar to Carroll's style to receive the $1,500 first-place prize.

A trip to Doheny Memorial Library for the fourth annual Wonderland Awards on April 30 was akin to falling down the rabbit's hole. The Intellectual Commons room on the second floor was transformed by an array of student work ranging from limericks to mismatched, colorful teacups. (2) comments
