What to do about GI deserters? Shoot 'em, hang 'em, jail 'em - well, let's do something bad to them because they broke their "contract" with the U.S. military. After all, isn't signing up with the army pretty much like applying for a job with Verizon or IBM? Or that's what Alexander Comisar, a freshman from Texas, reasonably argues in his DT op-ed piece ("Deserters deserve no sympathy," April 10). (4) comments
Administration must accommodate students' protests In contrast to Harvard University and UCLA, who let students control an administration building for three weeks and engage in a hunger strike for two weeks respectively, USC administrators put principles over public relations with their smart and swift reaction to students who took over the president's office to protest how the university monitors the manufacturing of clothing with the USC brand ("Protesters relent under threat of suspension," April 11). While it is unrealistic to think that everyone will stop eating meat and that slaughterhouses will be abolished, it is not unreasonable to ask for a more humane environment for animals. They will still be slaughtered, but it is unnecessary to degrade, abuse and torture them in the process. (9) comments
