After years of rumors and vague promises, our
campus events center is finally becoming a reality. On Wednesday,
USC President Steven B. Sample announced that the USC athletic
department had raised enough money to start construction.
The new arena, which is to be named the Galen Center, is scheduled to
open in spring 2006. It will provide USC with something that our
campus has always lacked namely, a good indoor sports facility.
In recent years, similar projects such as the Staples Center have helped
revitalize the Figueroa Corridor, which links our campus with downtown Los
Angeles. The Galen Center is one more step in the right direction, as we
work to improve the city around us.
That said, however, the project does present risks. Some local residents
have complained that the university is trying to gentrify the area,
and that it is forcing longtime residents to seek affordable housing
elsewhere.
The Galen Center will be built on what is now a parking lot, so it will not
cause any homes to be demolished. Even so, it will cause a lot of
congestion on game days, and it may commercialize the area somewhat.
Inevitably, a certain number of residents will complain about the
inconvenience.
USC can avoid a lot of these complaints by including the community in the
planning process. The Galen Center should integrate itself into the
surrounding neighborhood, physically as well as economically.
If this is handled well, it can be a great opportunity for our school, and
it can help to unite the town and the gown as never before.

"flames" any individual or entity (e.g., sends repeated messages related to another user and/or makes derogatory or offensive comments about another individual), or repeats prior posting of the same message under multiple threads or subjects.
